Chicken is the most common animal protein source in pet food for a number of good reasons. First of all, it is abundantly available globally and a relatively trouble-free animal species in terms of export health certifications and religious sensitivity. Animal welfare initiatives with regard to chicken, such as slow-growing breeds and increased outdoor access, are adopted globally. Chicken’s carbon footprint is relatively small while by-products, such as chicken meal, chicken MDM, and chicken plasma, have an excellent nutritional profile or functional properties.
Recent studies show that chicken collagen, especially in its so-called hydrolyzate form, can prevent the destruction of cartilage and that omega-3 long-chain fatty acids combined with collagen peptides can reduce inflammation in the joints – specifically as part of osteoarthritis. Pure chicken collagen peptides powder, which is derived from chicken carcasses, contains about 50% strongly hydrolyzed collagen and 8% chondroitin. It can be used to supplement a pet’s day-to-day food to help improve the skin and coat condition and reduce mobility problems related to bones, muscles, and cartilage.
