Carrot is a popular pet food ingredient that is very palatable to cats and dogs. It is usually added as a claim ingredient. Pure carrot contains a mix of soluble and insoluble, fermentable and non-fermentable dietary fibers. Together, these form the basis for good gut health. According to the Dog and Cat Food Ingredient Center, 42% of dry dog food and 33% of dry cat food, and 47% of canned dog food and 26% of canned cat food recipes contain some form of carrot. One of these is functional carrot fiber.
Functional carrot fiber is a fully plant-based ingredient that is produced from a side stream of the human food production of carrot juice. The carrot pulp is dried and milled into powder with no further additives. It contains around 33% insoluble and 27% soluble fiber. Insoluble fibers are important for healthy bowel functioning and weight management in senior pets. Soluble fibers are fermented in the gut into short-chain fatty acids, thereby acting as a prebiotic. Functional carrot fiber also includes 5% crude protein, 21% carbohydrates, carotene, vitamin K1, potassium, and antioxidants. It can be used as a clean-label water binder in various wet pet food recipes; one part of functional carrot fiber can hold up to 16 parts of water.
