Collagen as an increasingly popular functional ingredient in pet food

January 10 2023 - News

IQI white paper collagenFollowing the human food trend, collagen is becoming a popular and highly targeted pet food ingredient. Collagen is a nutritious, functional, and highly digestible source of protein with specific health benefits for cats and dogs. These range from supporting a healthy skin and coat to promoting bone development and healthy strong cartilage and joints for mobility. This can make collagen a valuable pet food supplement – especially for older cats and dogs.

Collagen is naturally produced in the skin, bones, cartilage, and connective tissue of animals and has a number of important functions. These include providing structure, support and strength to skin, bones, muscles, and cartilage. The continuous natural cycle of collagen breakdown and regeneration can be exacerbated, however, because of aspects like daily wear and tear, genetic issues of certain dog breeds, UV rays, stress, and aging.  There is growing evidence that collagen supplementation can help mitigate the resulting damaging effect on the skin and reduced mobility of pets.
