Microalgae as traceable and sustainable omega-3 alternative for pet food

April 21 2026 - News

IQI Trusted Petfood_Microalgae as a clean source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acid for pet food

Microalgae are microscopic organisms that present unique opportunities as a functional ingredient in pet food. They offer high contents of essential long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which offer multiple health benefits for cats and dogs.

In our updated white paper on algae-based omega-3 solutions, IQI’s Innovation Manager Geert van der Velden takes a deep dive into algae EPA and DHA solutions for pet food. Topics covered the white paper include production, health benefits, and the IQI solutions:

Algae production

Microalgae omega-3 is produced in state-of-the-art facilities and is an economically viable and sustainable alternative to marine omega-3 ingredients. Culturing microalgae in closed reactors through fermentation and solvent-free extraction offers full control, traceability, and consistent quality.

Health benefits of algal EPA and DHA

Algae offer higher EPA and DHA contents than salmon or fish oil. They are ideal for pet food formulations with higher omega-3 contents that aim for health benefits for cats and dogs. These range from growth and development support for puppies and kittens, to skin and coat support and anti-inflammatory properties.

Want to learn more about algae EPA and DHA and IQI’s microalgae products? You will find an overview of our solutions and their possible applications in the white paper.
