Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, EPA and DHA) offer a range of health benefits to both humans and pets, such as cats and dogs. To achieve this, the pet food industry traditionally includes different sources of omega-3 in pet food. But not all omega-3 fatty acids are alike: to deliver its full functionality, the animal must convert the short-chain fatty acid ALA from food into the long-chain fatty acid EPA and then DHA – but the conversion rate is very low. Therefore the choice of omega-3 source is crucial to attain the right levels of EPA and DHA in the final pet food. Supplying EPA and DHA via pet food is the most effective, efficient and economical. High omega-3 fish oil is a beneficial ingredient rich in EPA and DHA that can be added directly to the pet food formula.

In the latest white paper by Geert van der Velden, IQI Trusted Petfood Ingredients’ Innovation Manager, he explains the unique benefits of fish oil as a direct source of EPA and DHA long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.
