Salmon meal as a sustainable and traceable pet food ingredient

In partnership with Fiordo Austral, the global market leader in salmon products, IQI offers salmon meal, oil and hydrolysates from sustainable production on the Chilean coastline. Of these, the origin certification for salmon meal has now been renewed, enabling pet food manufacturers to document their supply chain. 

Sustainable salmon products

Fiordo Austral based in Chile is the world’s biggest producer of salmon products, including salmon meal, oil and hydrolysates. These are made from pure and fresh-farmed Chilean salmon, including ASC-certified salmon, adhering to the highest international sustainability and quality standards. IQI introduced Fiordo Austral’s salmon meal, oil and hydrolysates in the European pet food market in 2018, followed by the North-American pet food market in 2021. In certifying the purity of its products, Fiordo Austral works with Norwegian company ORIVO, leader in origin certification of food, feed and nutritional ingredients. 

Origin verified salmon meal

Together, IQI and Fiordo Austral want to meet pet food manufacturers’ demand for sustainably produced salmon from a transparent supply chain. Origin verification of salmon ingredients is an important part of achieving this. The origin verification of salmon meal is based on the ORIVO authenticity testing program wherein all analytical verification is performed on the finished salmon-meal product. As the next step in this process, IQI is working together with Fiordo Austral to include primary data for the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). 

Source of essential nutrients

Salmon meal, oil and hydrolysates are an important source of protein, beneficial long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and essential nutrients, available in a broad range of specifications to suit a wide variety of even the most unique pet food applications. All product specifications can be found in the new product leaflet. The protein content for the available products is 62% or 68% for salmon meal , in bulk or IBC stabilized with natural anti-oxidants, and 72% or 77% for salmon hydrolysate. Salmon oil is a very good source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids with a typical total omega-3 content of 10 to 25%.
