Potatoes are a traditional food source well-known for their nutritional benefits and wide range of applications. One of these is as a nutritional, versatile, and sustainable source of starch for grain-free pet food. Potatoes are rich in starch and other important nutrients for cats and dogs. Potatoes can be applied to improve the structure and texture of pet food and are an excellent binding agent for pet food applications. Potato starch can also be used to create potato protein.
Potato protein is made from side streams of potato starch production. This makes potato protein a sustainable alternative to meat-based sources of protein. The amino acid profile of potato protein is excellent, along with the protein to ash ratio. Potato protein is an ideal protein source for plant-based or hybrid pet foods. Besides standard potato proteins, other potato proteins with lower glycoalkaloid levels are also available. This is relevant when high levels of potato protein are included, as glycoalkaloids contain both chaconine and solanin, which have a bitter taste and can therefore affect palatability.
