From ambition to breakthrough: co-creating the future of pet food

From ambition to breakthrough: co-creating the future of pet food

If a plan is only as good as its implementation, IQI Trusted Petfood Ingredients and the OSI Group are proving how it’s done. Only two months into their partnership, they delivered on their stated ambition of growing business with innovative solutions, of which hydrolyzed dried beef is a promising example. It’s a bit of a technical story, but the takeout is clear: co-creation really pays off.

When IQI joined the OSI Group on October 18th, 2023, the aim was to expand business and create new pet food ingredients that offer unique solutions for its customers and suppliers worldwide. With direct access to the OSI Group’s extensive network and supply chain expertise, and drawing on years of its own experience and specialized know-how in pet food ingredients, IQI now had the chance to build upon its reputation and grow out to become a global leader in the pet food industry.

Eagerness to innovate

OSI Group and IQI share an entrepreneurial passion, eagerness to innovate, as well as a can-do mentality and strong will to put ideas into practice. One of the first ideas was to optimally use their unique positions. As the OSI Group specializes in large-scale meat processing for leading foodservice and retail food brands around the world, it can guarantee a continuous flow of meaty, high-protein by-products. IQI, on their side, understands the art of upcycling. Next to their experience in sourcing human-grade rest streams to create high-quality pet food ingredients, they also have great expertise in supplying these ingredients to the pet food market. However, controlling the supply chain from source to shelf is one thing; what matters is what you do in between.

“Using their expertise in upcycling human-grade rest streams to create high-quality pet food ingredients, IQI worked with us to transform our hydrolyzed dried beef into a product perfectly fit for application in the pet food market.” – Boneselect

Fresh beef bones

This is where co-creation comes in. To maximize the potential of their fresh meaty beef bones and ensure the best possible pet food ingredient, IQI and the OSI Group partnered with Boneselect Sp. z o.o. Operating from a modern, fully ISO-certified processing plant near Konin, Poland, this family business specializes in refining fresh food-grade beef bones into high-quality final products for food, pet food, and various applications. The only plant in Central and Eastern Europe to do so, Boneselect obtains fat, bone meal, and bone chips from European originated fresh beef bones. Additionally, through partial enzymatic hydrolysis, evaporation, and spray-drying of the soluble proteins derived in this process, they have created the product the pet food industry was waiting for.

Potential winner

Hydrolyzed dried beef, named dried beef in IQI’s ingredient portfolio, is a rich source of pure beef with high protein and low ash content. The ingredient comes as a light brown powder that provides pet food with a distinctive beef-like flavor and is highly digestible for dogs and cats. Because it is partially hydrolyzed and spray dried, IQI’s dried beef serves as an effective binder and enhances palatability. Taking away the need for additional aromas and extracts, the product also substantially reduces recipe costs. Industry interest is on the rise as application possibilities grow. Even in the final stages of development, major pet food brands are already jumping on board.

Desired choice in pet food

Dried beef, with its unique qualities and characteristics, is a valuable addition to IQI’s product portfolio. Moreover, the new ingredient stands as a testament to the strength of good partnership
