The use of prebiotics is a significant trend in the food and pet food industry. Prebiotics support the natural defence barrier by increasing and stimulating ‘good’ microflora in the gastrointestinal tract. Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are second generation prebiotics, derived from lactose in cow’s milk, that are used in human infant and adult nutrition products. It is now being shown that this proven food ingredient also contributes to good gut health of monogastric companion animals, such as cats and dogs.
In the latest white paper by Geert van der Velden, IQI’s Innovation Manager, he looks into the important role of GOS in addressing some of the key gastrointestinal challenges faced by cats and dogs today. He shows how GOS is an established, science-based ingredient for pet foods with a number of benefits to replace other prebiotics from vegetable origin such as inulin and FOS.
