Herring is a well-known fish species for human consumption and has been fished in Europe for centuries. Herring fishing is well managed by the European authorities. Depending on the exact location of the fisheries, the herring can be MSC-certified. A characteristic of the herring species is that it is relatively rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA), which not only contribute to healthy joints and overall mobility, but also support a healthy skin and coat in both cats and dogs.
Herring meal is a single-species fish meal commonly used in pet food, especially in high-quality or premium pet food formulations. It is made by grinding and drying herring to form a concentrated and protein-rich meal. Typically, pet food producers like to use herring meal because the protein content is around 70%. The ash level is relatively low, making it a very suitable ingredient for high-protein (cat) diets. The final product is stabilized with a natural anti-oxidant for a longer shelf life. Natural antioxidants are strongly preferred over synthetic antioxidants by the pet food industry.
