Astaxanthin: a powerhouse antioxidant

Antioxidants are critically important substances that support the health and well-being of cats and dogs. They can be found in many different plant-based food sources as well as different kinds of seafood. One of the most beneficial methods to ensure plenty of antioxidants in pet food is by adding them as a supplement. As of recently, IQI offers a new and powerful antioxidant: astaxanthin-rich microalgae.

Powerful antioxidant

Astaxanthin is a red pigment found mostly in krill, salmon, shrimp and microalgae. Next to giving off color, astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that has a strong ability to both balance and strengthen the immune system, thereby improving its ability to defend the body whilst also helping to suppress the overactive immune responses that create unwanted inflammation. It Is also beneficial for eyes and vision, supports skin and coat health, and improves gut functioning. Specific benefits for senior dogs include improved mitochondrial function, which raises their overall energy level.

Astaxanthin from microalgae

Our supplier AstaReal in Sweden produces astaxanthin from microalgae and is committed to working towards increasing health and wellbeing of pets in a sustainable way. Microalgae are the primary food source for essentially all marine and freshwater food chains. For the production of astaxanthin-rich micro-algae, AstaReal uses the most abundant source of microalgae found in fresh open water, Haematococcus pluvialis, which makes it a sustainable source.

A red powder

IQI astaxanthin-rich microalgae is supplied as a red powder, composed of 66% rape seed oil and 32% algae biomass. It contains more than 1.5% astaxanthin, as well as the antioxidants tocopherol and ascorbyl palmitate. The unique thing about this composition is that it is way more thermostable. As an antioxidant, astaxanthin is 4.9 times stronger than beta-carotene, 110 times stronger than vitamin E and 6,000 times stronger than vitamin C. IQI astaxanthin-rich microalgae can be added to any kind of extruded or wet pet food and makes a great addition to the diet of cats and dogs.
