Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, EPA and DHA) offer a range of health benefits to both humans and pets, such as cats and dogs. To achieve this, the pet food industry traditionally includes different sources of omega-3 in pet food. But not all omega-3 fatty acids are alike and they have different kinds of biological functionality in the animal. To deliver its full functionality, the animal must convert ALA from food into EPA and then DHA – or take them from food directly. Therefore the choice of omega-3 source is crucial to attain the right levels of EPA and DHA in the final pet food.
In the latest white paper by Geert van der Velden, IQI Trusted Petfood Ingredients’ Innovation Manager, he explains the many health benefits of EPA and DHA omega-3s and the crucial relation between omega-3 source and yield of EPA and DHA.
